10 Days of #10Most: Captain William Tyson House The Captain William Tyson House is a boldly detailed two-and-one-half-story home that was built about 1863-64, and is one of the most elaborate of Bergen County’s few remaining grand Italianate houses. The house was purchased by Rochelle Park in 2015, and was issued a Certificate of Eligibility for listing on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in the same year. Since that time, the Township Committee has changed in composition, and the current majority wants to sell or tear down the structure. The Rochelle Park Historical Society is attempting to forestall either of these actions by the Township Committee. The exterior and interior are little altered, and entering this house today is like taking a step back in time. This grand Italianate house is now a rarity in Northern New Jersey and should be saved. To date the Township has repaired the roof, replaced the heating system, and painted the exterior and the garage. The Rochelle Park Mayor and Township Committee received a 2015 Bergen County Historic Preservation Award for their preservation efforts. However, that these previous efforts are now at risk with the current administration, highlights a threat faced by countless municipally-owned historic properties that must weather changing administrations and shifting political whims. PNJ urges the Township to continue their efforts to preserve the building and live up to the award-winning precedent they previously set for themselves. https://www.preservationnj.org/listings/captain-william-tyson-house/ #SomeplaceNotAnyplace #ThisPlaceMatters #PreservationMonth

A real shame to see the condition of this place. The former home of Percy Julian designed by one of our most talented architects falling into disrepair. #oakparkarchitecture #oakpark #thisplacematters #endangeredoakpark #thorntonherr #percyjulian #historichomes #artsandcraftsarchitecture #praireschool

Where am I without looking at the geotag? 🔎 Somewhere in Europe, surely. Germany? Nope! Good ole Milwaukee, Wisconsin! No wonder Milwaukee was once known as the “German Athens of America!”🇧🇪🇱🇺 #downtown #milwaukee

Window Details 🙌 Zoom in to see all the unique window details on the Fleming Hyatt House circa 1907. “This regal Victorian was built in 1907 by Sam Fleming, founder and owner of the Fleming Grain Company, and his wife, Cynthia Cannon Fleming. Known for many years as the Doyenne of Maple Street, as Third Avenue South was known until the mid-1930s, Cynthia came from a long line of distinguished Tennesseans. Her grandfather was John B. McEwen, mayor of Franklin during the Civil War, and she was also the great-granddaughter of Newton Cannon, governor of Tennessee and great-great niece of Aaron V. Brown, another early 19th century Tennessee governor. Her nephew Henry Cannon was the husband of Sarah Colley Cannon, better known as Minnie Pearl.” @visitfranklintn #franklintn @williamsonheritage #franklinhistoricdistrict #americasfavoritemainstreet #williamsoncounty #historichome @savingplaces #historicpreservation #thisplacematters #historichouse #windowdetails #nashvillerealtor #nashvillerealty #memphisrealtor #columbiatn #muletown #remaxelite #realtor #oldhouselove #victorianhouse #minniepearl

Smith Memorial Arch. 1898-1912. James H. Windrim. Let's kick off Memorial Day Weekend by recognizing a memorial, one woefully unprotected. Greeting visitors to West Fairmount Park, Smith Memorial Arch honors Pennsylvania's Civil War heroes. Sculptures of Pennsylvania generals top the arches, led by two of Gettysburg heroes George Meade and John Reynolds. Daniel Chester French and Alexander Sterling Calder were two of the sculptors who contributed to the project. As I alluded to before, the Smith Memorial Arch is not listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, owing, perhaps, to the misguided assumption that future Fairmount Park stewards will be as taken with it as we are. #philly #philadelphia #fairmountpark #memorialday #memorial #civilwar #sculpture #architects #architecture #neoclassical #archi_ologie #architectureporn #preservation #historicpreservation #saveourhistory #preservationmatters #thisplacematters #deservetopreserve #deserve2preserve

Encore Urban Living, the new color-shifting skyscraper at the corner of 8th and Sycamore. Friends and I were walking up Main Street Tuesday when Encore caught our eyes. The reflective color-shifting panels look especially vibrant after a hard rain and during a sunset. But maybe that’s also just because from the corner of 7th and Main we had a perfectly clear line of sight through the Joseph Auto Group’s “legacy” of destruction. #RememberTheDennison #BoycottJosephAuto

The Mcguire House circa 1882 in Dahlonega, Georgia. Built by Goodman McGuire as his residence, he later sold it to buy another property. Mr. Sheldon L. Prater, a subsequent owner, added a small store building on the McGuire lot. In 1905 Mr. J. F. Moore purchased the property to provide a first home for his newly married son, Montie Moore. By 1914 the small Prater store had vanished from its original site. The McGuire House was the home of Mr. & Mrs. Dan Early from 1920 until their deaths in 1965.
